Stress in Support-Adjacent Elements of a Welded Truss under Operational Loads

Abstract

A full-scale mechanical experiment was conducted on a 6000 × 1200 mm rectangular welded truss to determine the stress–strain state parameters of the support-adjacent elements. The study employed a test rig that ensured proper positioning of the structure and the application of loads to two nodes on the upper chord of the truss. Local strain measurements were carried out on two sections of the lower chord, one vertical member, and two diagonal members. For this purpose, digital dial indicators with a resolution of 0.001 mm and specially designed mounting devices were used. The gauge length for strain measurement was 200 mm. Based on the experimental results, stresses in five selected truss elements were determined under a gradual increase of static load from 0 to 20 kN. A satisfactory correlation was observed between the experimental results and those obtained using the ANSYS software package.
